Practice Tips for Parents
1/10/2012

Hey guys just wanted to give parents some tips and ideas to get kids to practice. We all know that practice makes better!

1. Have them practice immediately, when first getting home from the studio.
- The material will still be fresh in their minds...waiting too long can lead to them leaving gaps or forgetting material all together.
2. Longer is NOT better!
- Stick to these time frames...any longer and it's probably too much!
- 5 min (White to Orange), 10 min (Purple-Green) & 15 min (Brown Belt and up)
3. Get involved and make it fun!
- Even if you don't know what they're doing...you can call out material for them to practice! Reward them with positive feedback for good attitudes, etc...
4. Be CONSISTENT!
- Practicing only before a stripe or belt testing will not teach your child good practice habits. Make it part of their daily routine.
5. Turn OFF the distractions!
- Practice without the TV or radio. Keep siblings away from the area. Practice with total focus and no distractions for better results.

Hope these tips help. If you have any challenges or questions please feel free to talk to me or any of my instructors.

Halloween Safety
10/25/2011

Halloween Safety

1. Kids should always go trick or treating with a responsible adult. If you go with a group of kids you should try to have one adult for every two to three kids.

2. Plan a safe route and carry a cell phone.

3. DO NOT let your kids eat any candy until you have first looked through it. Only allow your children to eat factory sealed candy...avoid home made treats passed out by strangers.

4. Carry a flashlight and make sure your child has reflective tape or lighting on his or her costume. For example you could use the reflective necklace that we passed out at the Halloween Party.

5. Look both ways when crossing the street. Use crosswalks whenever available.

6. Have your child wear flame resistant costumes. Don't walk near lit candles or luminaries.

7. Don't let your child wear a costume that is too long.

8.  If a costume involves any sort of fake weapon, make sure that it is made of a flexible material such as cardboard or foam. Or, avoid the whole problem of weapons by challenging your child to design a costume that is scary without one.

9. Avoid houses that are not well lit or are not visable from the street.

10. Use the buddy system for any groups of kids.

Have a fun and SAFE Halloween Night!

Pre-Testing
9/12/2011

Hey guys welcome to the SK Making It Happen Blog! Check it out for upcoming events, studio specials and much more!

This week...our 1st Blog EVER!

Pre-Testing...Here We Go!!!!
I personally love the opportunity to work with pre-testers. My favorite aspect being the growth that takes place in mental, physical and overall well-being (not the watching you guys do a 1000 push-ups as some of you may think). I'm very excited for this Winter 2011 Pre-Test Team...I think we are going to accomplish some awesome things these next few weeks!
